Jacob Tsimerman, a Canadian mathematician and recent Fields Medal recipient, has announced he is joining OpenAI's safety team. Driven by concerns over rapid AI progress, he predicts AI will soon become superhuman at professional mathematics.
At the recent International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, the author spoke with over 20 leading mathematicians about AI's impact. While Tsimerman is pessimistic about the future of math as a traditional profession, the majority of interviewed mathematicians were surprisingly optimistic about using AI to advance their research.
