A researcher shared incredible progress on the NIST task board, a highly challenging benchmark for real-world robotic manipulation. It consists of various contact-rich and precise tasks that are extremely difficult or impossible for traditional automation.

According to the quoted internal source, as models improve, they must learn not only the quirks of different robots but also generalize to fine-grained subtleties of friction and forces to prevent objects from getting wedged. Seeing these internal results gave researchers goosebumps, as the models now move in a way that feels a bit more "human" than before.
