How Frontier Labs Subsidize the Reinvention of Services via Training Data
phoebeyao · x · 2026-08-05
The author observes that frontier AI labs are effectively subsidizing the reinvention of traditional services by purchasing training data.
Smart service providers are turning customer workflows into high-quality training data and selling it back to the labs. This requires rebuilding operations around instrumented workflows and rigorous quality control. Despite short-term operational pain, it builds a compounding competitive moat: continuously learning where frontier models perform and fail on real-world tasks.
This infrastructure not only helps automate services and cut costs but also enables the business to take on more complex work, which in turn exposes new failure modes—creating a continuous data flywheel.
