Anthropic's $10B Compute Deal Goes to Months-Old Startup Volta

Anthropic recently signed a $10 billion computing deal with Volta, a cloud startup only months old. Previously, contracts of this scale went exclusively to Amazon, Microsoft, or Google, as only they owned the land, power, and capital for frontier model training.

However, the bottleneck has shifted from money to power, and big tech cannot energize sites faster than newcomers. The deal went to Volta Infra, valued at $2.4 billion after raising about $300M from Nvidia and Michael Dell's family office.

Volta owns almost no hardware. Its capacity comes from bitcoin miner Bitdeer's 121MW Norway site, leased for 16 years in a deal worth roughly $4.7 billion. Nvidia supplies chips and Dell handles system integration, while Volta holds the financing, contracts, and customers. To fund the buildout, Volta lined up a $5 billion program with Azora.

Anthropic is essentially buying a schedule rather than servers, paying a premium for speed that now includes counterparty risks never before seen in hyperscaler contracts.
