Current reasoning models rely on generating massive token chains (Chain-of-Thought) to solve complex problems. While this enhances capabilities in math and coding, it makes inference slow and expensive.
The article explores Latent Reasoning, an emerging research direction aiming to shift computation from discrete token-based traces into continuous hidden states. This approach allows models to explore multiple directions simultaneously, potentially reducing inference costs and improving planning. However, it also makes the model's internal reasoning significantly harder to inspect and audit for alignment.
