Guardrails and Context Loss: Developers Frustrated with Claude Opus 5 Experience
eyishazyer · x · 2026-08-04
Anthropic's net favorability among developers recently dropped to +3, lagging behind OpenAI's +11. A wave of core developers has independently reported significant degradation in the practical coding experience with Claude Opus 5.
Key Complaints
- Context Loss: Frequently goes off-track or forgets context mid-session.
- Overly Strict Guardrails: Safety mechanisms trigger too often, with the model stopping to ask for approval instead of finishing the task.
- Coding Loops: Gets stuck flip-flopping the same bug fix for up to 13 rounds, while competing models resolve it immediately.
- Hallucinated Jargon: Invents non-existent technical terms like "dead parameter."
Although Anthropic's internal benchmarks still show Opus 5 leading in coding evals, the gap between scores and actual user experience is causing real frustration.
