Three Flaws of LLM-Generated Peer Reviews: Endless Nitpicking and Lack of Concrete Judgment
Kwangryeol · reddit · 2026-08-04
A researcher outlined three major flaws in LLM-generated academic peer reviews:
- Endless Search for Uncontrolled Variables: LLMs excel at listing logically possible confounding variables but fail to judge their importance. This forces authors to waste time addressing technically possible but practically insignificant concerns during the rebuttal phase.
- Overly Abstract Criticism: LLMs often compare a specific proposed method against an entire research field (e.g., all Transformer architectures) rather than identifying concrete prior works, making the criticism unfalsifiable and unactionable.
- Lack of Detailed Technical Understanding: LLMs are easily fooled by high-level terminology similarities, recommending comparisons between papers that are only superficially related but differ substantially in computational structure.
The author emphasizes that a strong reviewer should filter out meaningless suggestions. Directly copying LLM outputs merely transfers the cost of evaluating speculation onto the authors.
