Researcher Calls for NeurIPS Review Overhaul: Drop Discussion Period, Ban LLMs
gabriberton · x · 2026-08-04
AI researcher Makarand Tapaswi urged NeurIPS to adopt practices from top vision conferences to overhaul its peer review process.
He proposed three specific fixes:
- Remove the discussion period: Arguing that the current review discussion phase is useless.
- Restrict LLM usage: Limiting rebuttals to 1 page and banning LLM-generated discussions so everyone can read authentic feedback.
- Mandate final ratings: Separating preliminary and final ratings, and desk rejecting papers of reviewers who fail to submit their final ratings.
