OpenAI once lined up $51M for Rain AI chips as Altman personally invested
tinyfool · x · 2026-08-04
WIRED reported that OpenAI signed a nonbinding letter of intent to spend $51 million on Rain AI’s brain-inspired chips, while Sam Altman had also invested more than $1 million personally.
The deal later stalled: OpenAI said it had not moved forward with Rain and was only open to future discussions. The article also notes Rain’s shifting financing structure, the removal of Saudi-affiliated funding, a CEO change, and an initial hardware timeline that had pointed to October 2024 before delays set in.
