Steve Yegge says coding agents need bespoke harnesses, not reusable platforms

Steve Yegge argues that coding agents should be built around loops, graphs, and a harness that is tightly integrated with the application rather than sold as a generic reusable layer.
He says his previous reusable harness, Gas Town, eventually collapsed because newer Claude/Opus behavior kept getting stuck editing the harness itself instead of converging on the actual work. His replacement, Wheelhouse, is bespoke and closed-source, designed for his own workflow.
A major theme is that once models become capable enough, the agent harness itself turns into part of the product architecture: either it becomes chaos, or it becomes a kind of city with structure and taste.
Yegge also says he has returned full-time to his long-running game Wyvern because the models are finally good enough to help him on it, while he still does occasional high-paying consulting work on the side.
