LLMs Reach Master Level; GM Requires Wider Exploration and Backtracking

Reflecting on a prediction made roughly 1.7 years ago, the author estimates that current LLMs are operating at the Master level in competitive programming and chess.
To reach the Grandmaster (GM) level, the author argues that models need to go wider in their exploration of ideas and improve their ability to backtrack from rabbit holes.
