Free app teaches LLM basics and trains a small model locally on Apple MLX

A free app called Language Model Builder lets you build a small language model locally on your Mac in two parts:
- a 90-minute interactive textbook that walks through tokenization, embeddings, attention, transformers, training data, loss, gradient descent, and fine-tuning without requiring coding or math background
- a local training workbench powered by Apple’s MLX, where you can pre-train a base model, fine-tune with SFT, align with DPO, watch loss curves in real time, and chat with the model you trained
The app runs fully offline, requires no account, and claims you can get coherent multi-paragraph output in about a day with default settings; a GPT-2-small-class model takes roughly a week on a high-end Mac.
