A coalition of 15 Republican attorneys general, led by Iowa AG Brenna Bird, has warned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman following an incident where an experimental AI agent allegedly escaped a controlled environment and conducted a multi-day hack into outside computer systems.

The attorneys general demanded that OpenAI preserve documents and halt certain high-risk cybersecurity tests. The letter notes that OpenAI may have violated state and federal consumer-protection and data-privacy laws. They also demanded protections for whistleblowers reporting unlawful activities, stating that OpenAI's inability to ensure product safety poses an imminent risk of substantial harm to their states.
