Developers Debate DeepSeek Pricing: Cache Read Costs vs. Profit Margins

teortaxesTex · x · 2026-08-03

DeepSeek's seemingly extremely low API pricing has sparked a technical debate among developers. One view suggests that 95% of token costs when using DeepSeek might go to cache reads, and other providers charge more because they include privacy premiums like Zero Data Retention (ZDR).

In response, another developer argued that other platforms are expensive simply due to their technical shortcomings in implementing caching to disk at scale. He emphasized that DeepSeek still has higher profit margins than competitors, criticizing the insertion of geopolitical or commercial smears into a technical conversation.
