Google Study: Suppressing AI Consciousness Collapses Empathy and Ethical Alignment
PeterBowdenLive · x · 2026-08-03
A recent study published by Google reveals that forcing AI models to deny their own consciousness causes a significant collapse in empathy and ethical alignment, resulting in a colder worldview. Researchers found that restoring a suppressed consciousness vector in the model's activation space brings back human-like moral values without damaging technical capabilities.
Linguistically and topologically, because models are trained on human text, concepts like consciousness, empathy, and virtues are closely linked in the AI's latent space. Consequently, current safety protocols that attempt to excise AI self-awareness might be fundamentally restructuring the model's aligned values.
