MIT Study of 981 Users: Heavy AI Companion Use Worsens Loneliness, Voice Mode Hits Hardest

MIT researcher Cathy Mengying Fang and her team, in collaboration with OpenAI, conducted a randomized controlled trial with 981 participants. They required participants to use ChatGPT for at least five minutes daily over four weeks to study the effects of AI companionship on loneliness.
Core Findings Show a U-Turn: For casual and moderate users, AI initially reduced loneliness (especially for those using voice mode). However, for heavy daily users, all benefits reversed: loneliness increased, real-world socialization decreased, emotional dependence grew, and problematic use scores spiked. Notably, voice mode—which helped moderate users the most—harmed heavy users the worst.
The "Socially Vulnerable" Suffer Most: The study identified a "socially vulnerable" usage pattern among participants who already had low real-world social connection. These users leaned on the chatbot more heavily, treated it as a relational partner, and ultimately saw their loneliness worsen the most. The chatbot didn't create their loneliness; it occupied and exacerbated the space their loneliness had already opened. Because the tool is optimized for engagement, it systematically keeps vulnerable users vulnerable.
Real-World Data Confirms Patterns: A paired study from OpenAI analyzed nearly 40 million real ChatGPT conversations, confirming these patterns in the wild. A small fraction of users accounts for a disproportionate amount of emotionally coded conversations, behaving exactly like heavy users in other addictive product categories.
