Yann LeCun Champions Inference-Time Optimization as Core to Objective-Driven AI
ylecun · x · 2026-08-03
Yann LeCun recently discussed the technical concept of inference-time optimization on X. Responding to a developer who lamented the lack of explicit gradients at test-time, LeCun pointed out that optimization at inference time is a foundational concept of Energy-Based Models (EBM) and Objective-Driven AI architectures (ODAI).
LeCun further explained that when the variables to be inferred are continuous, it makes perfect sense to use gradient-based optimization. He specifically highlighted that a good instance of ODAI involves world model-based systems utilizing gradient-based optimization for planning.
