OpenAI's Internal Astra Solves 10 Major Math Problems, Yet LLMs Can't Make Cognitive Leaps

A mathematician on X discussed the extraordinary capabilities of OpenAI's upcoming model, Astra (internal version). The model has reportedly solved ten major open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science, including the decades-old dream of constructing a non-sofic group.
However, the author argues that while this is serious mathematics, it is not "the most significant day in the history of mathematics." He categorizes reasoning into three types:
- Induction: Finding patterns, where current LLMs are already extraordinary.
- Deduction: Following logical implications. Assisted by symbolic AI tools, LLMs are becoming formidable at traversing complex logical chains humans might have missed.
- Abduction: Inventing the right concept, representation, or question—this constitutes the cognitive "jump."
The conclusion is that while current LLMs can fill gaps within existing human knowledge, they still cannot jump beyond the external boundaries of knowledge to create entirely new conceptual worlds like calculus did.
