NeurIPS Peer Review is Broken: Exponential Submissions Meet LLM-Generated Reviews

Addressing the recent breakdown in peer review at top AI conferences like NeurIPS 2026, the author argues this is a mathematical inevitability: submission volumes are growing exponentially, while the pool of qualified reviewers grows only linearly, heavily relying on junior PhD students with less than two years of experience.
Under high-pressure, unrewarded conditions, review quality has plummeted. Most critically, a significant proportion of reviews and rebuttals are now LLM-generated, driving the information value of the entire process toward zero while costs remain unchanged.
The author notes that top conferences now primarily sell "legitimacy credentials" essential for visas, graduation, and hiring, as actual academic dissemination has been taken over by arXiv and community reputation. The post predicts that the first conference to pivot to an arXiv-based pre-screening model with mandatory open review records will instantly disrupt the academic reputation system.
