Discussing Hallucination Risks and Limitations of LLMs in Bibliography Retrieval
deliprao · x · 2026-08-03
Delip Rao replied to a discussion regarding LLM hallucination issues and the limitations of their experimental method in bibliography retrieval tasks:
- Hallucination Risk: If an LLM is used to process the output of retrieved bibliographies, hallucination risks remain. To completely avoid this, the tool must bypass the LLM and write directly to the bibtex file.
- Method Limitations: Modern LLMs perform exceedingly well in small-context copy tasks, making hallucinations rare. However, the real shortcoming of their method is its reliance on true bibliography data, as papers in certain disciplines (like materials science) are not fully indexed by open datasets.
