After speaking with engineers across startups and enterprises, the author notes that while AI significantly boosts individual productivity in writing, debugging, and documenting code, overall company output hasn't grown proportionally.
Teams are now reviewing more code, validating AI-generated changes, fixing new classes of errors, and managing increasingly ambitious roadmaps. The author argues that the real value of AI might not be writing twice as much software, but rather giving engineers more time to solve the problems that actually matter.
