AI Should Complement Humans, Not Replace Them, Argue Economists and Nobel Laureates

Project Syndicate published an article titled AI Must Enlarge the Economy, Not Divide It by Mark Esposito and Aurélie Jean. The authors note that over 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 Nobel laureates, have signed a statement warning that AI could reshape the global economy faster and on a larger scale than the Industrial Revolution.
Drawing historical parallels, the authors argue that technologies like the mechanical loom, the tractor, and the PC initially sparked mass unemployment fears but ultimately created more jobs by boosting productivity. Therefore, AI should be steered toward complementing and augmenting human capabilities rather than merely imitating humans. This requires policymakers to shift incentives away from favoring capital over labor and toward rewarding investments in human capital.
