Claude Skills in Action: Auto-Loading Custom Instructions to Optimize Context
anselm · x · 2026-08-03
Anthropic quietly shipped a "Skills" system for Claude, allowing users to create specialized instructions by dropping a folder with a SKILL.md file into their skills directory.
Claude reads the skill descriptions at startup and automatically pulls in the relevant custom instructions, scripts, and examples when the user asks a related question. This on-demand loading mechanism acts like bringing a specialist into the room, enabling highly customized workflows for writing, coding conventions, or accounting without cluttering the context window or requiring constant prompt engineering.
