The Only Moat That Survives AI: Verification-Grade Network Effects

Christian Catalini, founder of the MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab, argues that the current debate around AI moats is fought on the wrong terrain. As open-weight models close the gap with the closed frontier at a fraction of the cost, traditional barriers like routing, distribution, and app-layer features melt away every time models improve.
He asserts that anything that can be measured will eventually be automated, making the durable competitive advantage not the best model, but owning the measurement nobody else has. From these economic first principles, he concludes that verification is the real bottleneck to AI scaling, and only a "verification-grade" network effect compounds as the frontier moves forward.
