OpenAI Models Consume 10x Tokens for the Same Prompt, Dev Reports
michael_g_williams · reddit · 2026-08-03
A developer who fans out prompts to multiple LLMs reports that OpenAI models (specifically the 5.x family) often return token counts that are 10 times higher than Google's and at least 2 times higher than Anthropic's.
The significant discrepancy in token usage for the exact same prompt has prompted the developer to ask the community for the underlying reasons behind OpenAI's high token consumption.
