Most EU AI Act Rules Take Effect Today

The majority of the EU AI Act's provisions officially apply starting today. As the world's first comprehensive AI law, it uses a risk-based framework that bans certain uses, mandates transparency for others, and imposes strict controls on high-risk applications.
Key provisions now live include:
- Transparency duties (Article 50): Chatbots must disclose they are AI, and synthetic content, deepfakes, and certain biometric tools require clear disclosure.
- Enforcement: Enforcement powers for the AI Office and national authorities begin.
- High-risk delays: Obligations for standalone high-risk systems were pushed back to December 2027, with embedded systems waiting until August 2028.
