Gary Marcus Bets $1M Optimus Won't Beat Human Surgeons by 2030
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-08-02
Prominent AI commentator Gary Marcus tweeted his skepticism regarding Elon Musk's humanoid robot, Optimus. Musk previously predicted Optimus would be better than the best human surgeons by the end of the decade. Calling it absolutely absurd, Marcus offered a $1 million bet against this claim.
He later introduced the "egg test" as a litmus test for true AI capabilities. He argued that if Optimus cannot even walk into a random kitchen and boil an egg, surgical capabilities are out of the question. He views this basic physical world interaction as a bullshit detector for the fake-AI mafia.
