MIT Research: AI Compiles Biological Structures Like Pinecones into Manufacturable Materials

ProfBuehlerMIT · x · 2026-08-02

MIT Professor Markus Buehler shared new work demonstrating how AI can formalize physical systems (like a pine cone) into composable mathematical models to end-to-end derive and manufacture new active materials.

The research turns bioinspired engineering from mere analogy into formal compilation, making biology and mechanics explicit, checkable, and executable. This is the first end-to-end demonstration carrying a formally compositional multiscale model from a biological hierarchy through engineered design to executable manufacturing specifications.
