Real AI Usage Reshapes Stock Market: Higher AI Beta Yields Higher Returns

A new study indicates that actual AI usage is shifting how investors value companies. Researchers used 380 trillion tokens of data from OpenRouter to estimate real AI demand growth across firms, countries, and tasks.
The study found that companies whose stock prices moved positively with increased AI usage subsequently earned higher returns. This sensitivity, termed "AI beta," is strongest for closed models, paid users, experienced users, and long prompts.
This effect is not merely a tech-stock rally, as it remains significant even after controlling for tech stocks, semiconductors, and AI ETFs. The market currently values AI exposure positively in interactive work like communication and instruction, but less so in analytical, scientific, and operational tasks.
