AI Conjecture-Solving Will Shatter Modern Mathematics' Siloed Research Model
skdh · x · 2026-08-02
The author argues that the current wave of AI models solving mathematical conjectures will be the final straw for academic mathematics.
Modern math research is highly compartmentalized into silos, where researchers spend months or years on specific problems and coordinate slowly to avoid overlapping work. LLMs completely destroy this dynamic by effortlessly crossing domain boundaries and solving long-standing problems almost instantly. This massive shift in efficiency will cause significant short-term depression and disruption within the academic community.
