The Hidden Cost of AI Layoffs: When Decisions Erase Their Own Evidence

Drawing on journalist Karen Hao's perspective, the author points out that many companies lay off workers based on AI capability forecasts rather than actual performance. Klarna's failed AI customer service replacement was caught only because customer service metrics (wait times, churn) are highly visible.

In most business areas, however, cutting a team also eliminates the control group. With no baseline to compare against, quality degrades silently, and over years, the degraded version simply becomes the new normal for the company.

The author advises individuals to stop trying to outrun AI models. Instead, get closer to feedback loops and do work where results are visible and failures surface quickly.
