Opinion: AI Labs Should Focus on Foundational Inference, Not Vertical Products

Scobleizer · x · 2026-08-02

Tech blogger Robert Scoble amplified @jingconan's view that expecting a few hundred engineers in SF to solve every vertical domain problem globally is unrealistic. If AI labs focus on building vertical products (like Claude Code), it's a misallocation of resources. Developers actually need rock-solid infrastructure primitives: sub-50ms inference latency, deterministic instruction-following, 100% reliable tool-calling, and unbreakable structured outputs. With these foundations, the ecosystem can solve real-world problems.
