The AI Adopter's Decision Trap and the Fall of Leopold's Fund
Exponential View (Azeem Azhar) · rss · 2026-08-02
This issue of Exponential View discusses the decision trap in enterprise AI adoption and the risks of compute investments.
- The AI Investment Trap: Models show that companies with different AI learning practices exhibit similar early losses. Even at year five, the eventual losing approach looks best, often taking eight years to reveal outsized ROI. CEOs currently struggle to distinguish whether their spending is compounding learning or pure waste. In contrast, Mark Zuckerberg’s "side quest" strategy succeeds by continuously deepening infrastructure to inform next moves.
- Leopold's Fund Liquidation: Situational Awareness, a $45B fund founded by former AI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, was forced to liquidate this week. The fund leveraged roughly 4x to bet on the AGI capex build-out. However, the trade turned as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 28.6% from its peak. The author notes this unraveling doesn't prove Leopold’s underlying superintelligence thesis wrong.
