MXFP6 Quantization on Blackwell GPUs: ISA Support Without Native Acceleration
AlpinDale · x · 2026-08-02
Developer AlpinDale submitted a pull request to dphnAI/sonar adding native SM110 (Blackwell architecture) MXFP6 quantization support. The PR implements online quantization, allowing direct loading and running of regular BF16 models in MXFP6 format.
The author noted that while MXFP6 is supposedly "supported" on Blackwell GPUs, it currently exists only at the ISA level with no apparent native hardware acceleration. In practice, it acts as a neat gimmick—slightly faster than FP8 and more memory-efficient, but with limited overall acceleration.
