AI Data Center Boom Hits a Wall: Severe Electrician Shortage Emerges in the US

As hyperscale data centers like OpenAI's "Stargate" break ground, the US AI infrastructure expansion is facing a severe shortage of skilled trades workers. Microsoft's President stated that the electrician shortage is now the number one obstacle to building data centers in the US.
AI data centers require immense power, with single rack consumption reaching 120-140 kW, demanding complex power distribution and liquid cooling systems. To bridge the gap, tech giants are funding training: Meta allocated $115M for a training school, while OpenAI partners with unions. Consequently, Gen Z trade school enrollment has skyrocketed.
Furthermore, the compute surge is straining the power grid. Global data center electricity use is projected to reach 565 TWh in 2026, with power costs in dense areas spiking 267% over five years, shifting the financial burden onto everyday consumers.
