Transformer Shortages Slow AI Data Center Buildout, Lead Times Hit 3 Years

AI data center buildout is being significantly slowed by a shortage of power transformers. As qualifying new winding capacity takes approximately 36 months, demand continues to outrun the supply capabilities of a handful of heavy industry manufacturers.

Quanta’s $500M to $700M push into US transformer manufacturing and Hitachi Energy’s ¥6 trillion backlog highlight the persistence of this supply chain bottleneck. The cycle is only expected to turn if transformer lead times compress to 12-18 months for two consecutive quarters alongside dropping producer pricing, a shift that currently seems nowhere in sight.
