Gary Marcus: Domain-Specific AI Breakthroughs Don't Equal AGI

Gary Marcus criticized a recurring logical fallacy within the "AGI-is-near" community: the assumption that all forms of cognition are equivalent. Whenever AI achieves a breakthrough in a specific domain like math or coding, proponents often leap to the conclusion that universal problem-solving is imminent.
He pointed out that human expertise is highly multidimensional—strength in mathematics does not guarantee competence in writing or interpersonal understanding. Therefore, even if a model like Astra demonstrates impressive mathematical capabilities, it does not inherently mean it can overcome hallucinations, improve reliability, or tackle problems that are hard to formalize.
Marcus acknowledged the recent advancements as highly impressive but stressed that there is no reason to infer that such domain-specific achievements equate to reaching AGI or ASI.
