MIT Research Uses AI and Category Theory to Compile Pinecones into New Materials

MIT Professor Prof. Buehler shared a new study demonstrating the use of AI and category theory to formally "compile" physical matter, such as a pinecone, to derive and manufacture novel active materials end-to-end.
The work transforms bioinspired engineering from mere analogy into formal compilation. By formalizing biological hierarchies into composable mathematics, AI can reason directly about matter to produce verifiable and executable physical designs and manufacturing specifications.
