Gary Marcus Pushes Back on 'Math is Solved' AI Narrative
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-08-02
Responding to recent hype about AI solving complex, potentially Fields Medal-level math problems, Gary Marcus pushed back, stating that it does not mean math is solved.
He pointed out that current AI breakthroughs lack the underlying theory development, and AI might be significantly less effective in many corners of mathematics. He mocked the extreme optimism by comparing it to the past absurd claim that 'we might as well stop training radiologists' just because AI showed strength in one specific area.
