Compute Still King: French AI Circle Reflects on Efficiency Gap with DeepSeek

AI researcher Aymeric Roucher discussed the relationship between compute and efficiency in AI development, responding to claims that DeepSeek trained top-tier models with minimal compute (rumored 20,000 GPUs).
Using the formula Performance = Compute × Efficiency, he pointed out:
- 10x Efficiency is Unlikely: If French AI companies had training architectures comparable to DeepSeek, it would be widely known, suggesting such extreme efficiency is hard to replicate.
- Compute Remains Indispensable: Even with a 10x efficiency gain, it would only be used to jump further along scaling laws to unlock the next level of intelligence. Chinese AI lab directors are also aggressively demanding more compute.
He rhetorically asked if the French are simply too good to need compute, emphasizing the decisive role of computing infrastructure in the current LLM race.
