Local Open-Weight AI Models Outpace Moore's Law by 4x on Unchanged Hardware

A Hugging Face community article reviews the rapid progression of local open-weight AI models over the past two years. The author points out that while the hardware ceiling of the most expensive MacBook Pro (128 GB unified memory) has barely moved, the smartest open-weight model that can run on it has surged from a score of 3 (Llama 3 70B) to 50 (DeepSeek V4 Flash) on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

This translates to the intelligence of local AI doubling approximately every 6.4 months, improving almost four times faster than traditional Moore's Law. The article also includes updated benchmarks for local coding capabilities.
