A former Google employee revealed that their team built a ChatGPT-like product (codenamed LMChat) a full year before OpenAI's launch.

However, Google was too nervous to release it, and DeepMind was blocked from shipping products that could disrupt Google's existing business. swyx shared this as a prime counter-example for VCs asking founders, "What if the incumbent builds this?"
