Kimi CEO's PhD Advisor Russ Salakhutdinov: No Secret Architecture in Frontier AI, AGI in 2 Years is Hype
rsalakhu · x · 2026-08-01
In a recent in-depth podcast, Russ Salakhutdinov (CMU professor, former Apple/Meta AI lead, and PhD advisor to Kimi CEO Zhilin Yang) shared his insights on the current AI landscape:
- No secret architecture in frontier labs: The real moat is data, engineering, and infrastructure, not a mysterious architecture. All LLMs will eventually become commodities.
- AGI in 2 years is hype: People actually building AGI don't buy the two-year timeline.
- Chinese open-source dominance: He noted that Cursor and many other well-known startups are quietly running on Chinese open-source models.
- Agent bottlenecks: Computer use agents still hit a wall around 60% success rates when 99.9% is required, and the RL environment business isn't sticky.
- AI will replace consulting: He predicts AI will eventually replace McKinsey, Bain, and BCG.
