New MIT Research: AI Compiles Biological Structures Like Pinecones Into Novel Materials

GioeleZardini · x · 2026-08-01

MIT Professor Markus Buehler shared new research exploring the end-to-end compilation of matter, such as a pine cone, to derive new active materials. The work turns bioinspired engineering from analogy into formal compilation, making biology and mechanics explicit and executable. By formalizing physical systems as composable mathematics, AI can reason directly about matter itself to produce manufacturable physical designs.
