The author benchmarked Google Opal against Devin (Windsurf) by prompting both to build an interactive 8-team Premier League tournament bracket app.
- Google Opal: Completed in 45 seconds. Used a visual node pipeline with zero visible code and delivered fully functional interaction logic (clicking a team advances them all the way to the trophy).
- Devin: Took 2 minutes 21 seconds. Generated clean HTML/CSS/JS and successfully self-debugged a 404 error. However, the resulting bracket was static; clicking teams only inserted placeholder text, failing the app's core purpose.
The author concluded that Opal won not just on speed, but by shipping a functional application, whereas Devin wrote better-looking code that failed to do the job.
