Yale and UChicago Study: LLMs Generate Narrower Research Ideas Than Humans

A recent study from Yale and the University of Chicago reveals that the real gap between LLM-generated and human research ideas lies not in quality, but in range—LLMs think narrower than human researchers.
The researchers built a controlled test using 11,683 real papers, extracting the prior work of each paper as a shared starting point. They then asked models to propose new motivations and methods based on those same prior works and compared them to the actual human ideas.
Human ideas spread across diverse patterns like explaining mechanisms, testing failures, and building systems. In contrast, LLMs heavily leaned toward 'connecting separate work.' Only 12.1% of human ideas focused on this, whereas 47.1% to 64.2% of LLM ideas did. Even extra reasoning made this pattern stronger, suggesting models often polish a familiar recipe rather than exploring varied research moves.
