A study accepted to AIES 2026 builds a policy-facing stress test model to explore under what conditions AI automation rents can support a Universal Basic Income (UBI).
Key Findings:
- Capability Threshold: At current parameters, AI must reach 5-6x today's automation productivity to fund an 11%-GDP UBI, which could be feasible around 2030-2050.
- Market Structure: Monopoly or tight oligopolies lower the AI productivity threshold for UBI, but rents persist even under perfect competition.
- Public Capture: Raising the public revenue share from 15% to 33% halves the threshold, requiring no full nationalization.
