It highlights how early mechanical translation sparked the first AI boom. However, due to overpromising and technical limitations, the ALPAC report in 1966 delivered a harsh verdict, leading to a collapse in funding and the first AI winter. Despite this, these early attempts and setbacks laid the crucial foundations for modern LLMs.
