OpenAI's Next-Gen 'Astra': A Multi-Agent System Tackling Hard Science

OpenAI's next-generation AI model (or system), dubbed 'Astra', is generating buzz. According to The Information, Astra is a multi-agent system trained specifically for 'long-horizon tasks.'
In a recent demonstration, Astra solved 10 major problems across mathematics, quantum complexity, and theoretical computer science (costing an estimated $2,000 at hypothetical GPT-5.6 API prices), which Noam Brown called a 'major step for scientific reasoning.'
Analyzing its reasoning walkthrough, the author notes that Astra's most striking feature is its ability to recognize its own mistakes and change direction, akin to an evolutionary process of selection for ideas. The author argues this capability will eventually extend beyond math to all scientific fields, massively amplifying humanity's ability to create explanatory knowledge.
