According to Bloomberg, DeepSeek is building a 1GW AI data center in Inner Mongolia, its first hyperscale campus. The site is about 350km northwest of Beijing, and the company plans to lease additional capacity from neighboring operators. Previously relying on borrowed compute clusters, DeepSeek now aims to own its facility, with part expected to come online by end of 2027 or early 2028. Inner Mongolia was chosen partly for its average annual temperature of around 4°C, reducing cooling costs. Nvidia estimates such a facility with latest accelerators costs about $50B, though Chinese builds typically cost far less. Financially, DeepSeek recently raised $7B at a valuation near $50B and has started IPO preparations. The chip supplier remains unconfirmed, but Washington believes Blackwell processors have already reached the facility despite export bans.
